The Heritage Trail Older Adult Unit

Aging brings on many challenges. Decreased physical and mental capabilities, the loss of loved ones and reduced independence can mean significant changes in the lives of seniors. A sudden or prolonged change in behavior or mood may indicate a presence of mental illness. Sometimes, specialized care is needed and that’s where Haven can help.

Senior patients experiencing acute changes in mental status or behavioral problems may be admitted to the inpatient unit, where they are assessed by an interdisciplinary team of professionals. Patients are medically cleared prior to admission to the program. A case manager will monitor the patient’s progress and ensure that the patient receives a customized plan for treatment of their mental illness to stabilize their condition.

Senior adult patients receive personalized treatment for their mental health illnesses to stabilize their condition. The goal of inpatient care is to return our patients to their best possible level of health so they may continue to be treated safely as an outpatient.

The program’s aim is to provide comprehensive treatment options to older adults with long-standing or newly diagnosed mental illnesses such as anxiety, bipolar disorder, chemical dependency, depression and dementia. All treatment services are provided by an interdisciplinary team, including board-certified psychiatrists with special qualifications in geriatric psychiatry, a clinical psychologist, social workers, nursing staff, and activity therapists, all with expertise and experience in treating older adults.

The unit is a 20-bed; smoke-free unit designed for older adults with general psychiatric issues including depression and mild memory issues. An interdisciplinary team experienced in elderly psychiatric treatment collaborates to help return patients in the geriatric psychiatry unit to their best possible state of health. Patients will work closely with their nurses including in the discussion of patient and group activities.
